Point at the VIN barcode on the driver's door frame (any direction is fine). Hold 15–25 cm away and tilt the phone slightly so there is no shine on the label. Use the light only if it is dark.

Photo mode works best on iPhone and in poor light: tap the barcode on screen to focus, use your flash, and make sure the bars are sharp.
